At the beginning of term 3, Year 3 from Hoo St Werburgh took part in a WW2 evacuee day to launch their new learning journey for the term.  The journey is titled 'What was life like in Medway during WW2?' and aims to allow the children lots of opportunities to understand life on the home front and the impact it had on the local community. During the day the children dressed up as evacuees and had the opportunity to make gas masks.  They also took part in a billeting role play where member of staff acted as local villages at an evacuation centre and the children experienced the realities of being scrutinised and  in some cases rejected. 

Jacob in Polar bear class said "the day gave us the chance to experience what life was like for the evacuees.  I didn't get chosen because they said I was too big and would eat to many rations which was very unfair.  One of my friends didn't get chosen because she had glasses! It made me really think about how horrible it must have been for the evacuees being sent away from their homes"  Amelia said "It really helped us to understand what evacuation was all about and why it was important.  It was so much fun to dress up and be evacuees for the day but I don't think it was very fun for the real evacuees, I would have been petrified if it was in real life".
